All must have the ability to meet these criteria:
- Adhere well on a microscopic level, forming a hard, durable film that locks into every facet of the surface
- Provide outstanding gloss and a smooth, shiny finish
- Be exceedingly flexible, able to withstand severe temperature changes and eliminate cracking and peeling
- Brush on easily and level well
- Realise a uniform layer build-up, aided by inter-layer adhesion
- Achieve "wood that looks more like wood" creating a finish with warmth and depth. One that as MacKenzie records in his diary, "celebrates the grain of the wood"
- Embody the outstanding look and lustre of the best old-fashioned lacquers and shellacs without the repeated layering and sanding that they required
- Demonstrate superior ultraviolet-resistance (UV) to sunlight

The hallmark of MacKenzie & Stewart quality products is the microscopic array of small, tightly packed particles.

Ordinary polyurethanes reveal an irregular arrangement of particle sizes and spacing. |
